How to Tile a Roof in Reading: A Comprehensive Guide

Tiling a roof can be a daunting task, but with the right guidance, you can achieve a professional-looking finish that protects your property for years to come. At Precision Roofing and Building, we've been serving the Reading area for over 30 years, providing top-notch roofing services, including tile roofing. In this article, we'll walk you through the process of tiling a roof, highlighting the essential steps and materials needed to get the job done.

Choosing the Right Tiles

Before you start, it's crucial to select the right tiles for your roof. There are several types of tiles to consider, including:

  • Concrete tiles: A popular choice for their durability and affordability.
  • Clay tiles: Known for their attractive appearance and long lifespan.
  • Slate tiles: A premium option that offers exceptional durability and style.

Preparing the Roof

Before you begin tiling, ensure your roof is in good condition. Check for any damaged or rotten wood and replace it if necessary. Install a new underlay to provide a waterproof layer between the tiles and the roof deck.

Laying the Battens

Battens are the horizontal beams that support the tiles. Space them evenly, typically 300-400mm apart, depending on the type of tile you're using. Ensure the battens are securely fixed to the roof deck.

Tiling the Roof

Start by laying the first row of tiles along the bottom edge of the roof, ensuring they're aligned with the batten. Use a spirit level to check the tiles are straight and level. Continue laying tiles, overlapping each row by about 50mm. Use a notched trowel to apply a thin layer of mortar to the back of each tile, securing it to the batten.

Ridge Tiles

Ridge tiles are used to cover the ridge of the roof, where the two slopes meet. Cut the ridge tiles to fit, using a tile cutter or a wet saw. Apply a layer of mortar to the back of the ridge tile and press it firmly into place.

Finishing Touches

Once you've completed the tiling, inspect the roof for any gaps or uneven tiles. Apply a bead of mortar to any gaps and use a pointing trowel to smooth out the surface.
