How to Fold Felt Roof Corners in Reading: A Step-by-Step Guide
At Precision Roofing and Building, trading as A1 Roofing Reading, we understand the importance of properly folding felt roof corners to ensure a watertight seal and a durable roof. In this article, we will guide you through the process of folding felt roof corners, a crucial step in shed roofing and other flat roofing applications.
Materials Needed:
- Felt roofing material
- Adhesive (compatible with felt roofing)
- Utility knife or roofing knife
- Nails or staples
- Measuring tape
- Pencil or marker
Step 1: Prepare the Area
Before starting, ensure the roof surface is clean, dry, and free from debris. Measure the area where the felt corner will be applied, taking note of any obstructions or irregularities.
Step 2: Cut the Felt
Cut a piece of felt roofing material to the required size, leaving a 2-3 inch overlap on each edge. Use a utility knife or roofing knife to make a clean cut.
Step 3: Apply Adhesive
Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the felt, following the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure the adhesive is evenly spread and covers the entire area.
Step 4: Position the Felt
Place the felt corner on the roof surface, aligning the edges with the surrounding area. Use a nail or staple to secure the felt in place, starting from the center and working your way outwards.
Step 5: Fold the Corners
To create a watertight seal, fold the felt corners in a way that creates a 90-degree angle. To do this:
- Fold the felt corner inwards, creating a 45-degree angle.
- Use a utility knife or roofing knife to trim the excess felt, leaving a 1/4 inch overlap.
- Fold the felt corner inwards again, creating a 90-degree angle.
- Use a nail or staple to secure the folded corner in place.
Step 6: Trim the Edges
Use a utility knife or roofing knife to trim the excess felt around the edges, ensuring a smooth finish.
